Reflecting on August 29th 2007

I had the opportunity to spend the summer working with some amazing people in efforts to build the New Orleans community and it changed my life.

I grew up while I was there. I saw new hues of the universal qualities inherent to the human condition, remembered that I am the only person who can allow myself to be happy and I began to make art for myself.

I learned about Neutral Grounds and took a photo of a fire hydrant in a field that replaced the homes of the upper 9th ward. I danced with a seventy year old man until 4am on a Wednesday night, I dodged potholes and I gained weight.

I felt something in the humidity that caused a sense of urgency. Urgency built from an equation of anger and hope. Urgency that forces physical manifestation and begs “what if?”

Today marks two years since Katrina changed the course of history. I wanted to share some photos of my experiences and ask that we take a moment to recognize the effect of this great storm to take action and contribute to those dedicating their lives to re-building the New Orleans community. Please join me in supporting The Idea Village.
